Understanding the person you’re romancing is one of the biggest difficulties of dating because people - even couples who share a culture - have to different values, expectations, and beliefs. When two people from different cultures begin a romance, the dating difficulties increase due to cultural misunderstandings.
There are many examples of different cultural expectations interfering with an intercultural romance. A Korean friend of mine studying as an exchange student in Canada told me about her first date with a Canadian man. He asked her out, brought her to a restaurant, and after dinner asked her to pay. In Korea, if a man is interested in a woman he should pay for dinner, especially on the first date. After dinner, the woman would pay for coffee.
In the example above, due to her cultural perceptions the Korean woman thought that the Canadian man was not interested in dating her. For the Canadian male college student, going dutch (sharing the cost) was natural. He didn’t know that he was sending a negative message to his date.
There are many more examples of intercultural dating to share. Date Culture.com’s collection of articles cover dating and marriage related culture in North America, India, England, Thailand, and South Korea.
